Colibri Health Institute Inc., a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn, New York, is excited to announce its official launch.

Run by a passionate team of healthcare providers and public health experts, the organization was created to address critical gaps in the U.S. healthcare system. These gaps include a growing patient population with complex needs, limited appointment availability, short visit times, and widespread provider burnout. Additionally, the current system often takes a reactive approach–treating symptoms and diseases after they occur–rather than focusing on prevention.

Colibri Health Institute's mission is to empower people with the knowledge and tools they need to proactively manage their health, in order to reduce the burden of preventable acute and chronic illnesses on individuals and families. “We envision a world in which every person has easy access to simple, evidence-based information that equips them to make informed decisions about their health,” said Founder Margaret Schultz. “Our goal is to help people achieve the highest level of health possible, to improve wellbeing and overall quality of life.”

The organization's name, inspired by the Spanish and French words for “hummingbird,” reflects the qualities of this small but mighty creature—vitality, resilience, and strength. "We see prevention in a similar light," Schultz explained. "Small changes today can have a profound impact on health in the future. Simple preventive measures can yield powerful results when it comes to improving health.”

Colibri Health Institute is committed to addressing healthcare inequities, particularly in marginalized communities with limited access to high-quality care. The organization’s free preventive health content will be online and available for download, ensuring users can engage with its resources on their own terms. Additionally, offline options will be offered to support those without access to a smart device or internet connection.

Initial programs will include administering community health surveys to identify knowledge gaps and priority needs, creating relevant health education content, building an online hub of helpful local and national health resources, and designing a personalized health portal where individuals can save education content they find useful.
